More Information

One Piece is a popular Japanese anime and manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. As of date there are over 900 episodes and countless of One Piece films that have been released.

The story follows the main character, Monkey D. Luffy, captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. His dream is to become the Pirate King and to find the ultimate treasure, One Piece. Inspired by “Red Haired” Shanks, one of the yonkos or emperors of the sea, Luffy sets out from East Blue.

First in his crew is swordsman Roronoa Zoro, followed by navigator and cat burglar, Nami. The trio then meets Usopp, the crew’s resident sniper and liar, and Vinsmoke Sanji, a great chef who loves women. In the midst of their adventure and travels, they acquired a ship named the Going Merry.

They then met Tony Tony Chopper, the ship’s doctor, Nico Robin, a spy and archaeologist, Franky, a cyborg/robot shipwright, Brook, a skeleton musician and swordsman, and Jimbei, a fish-man a former member of the great Seven Warlords.

Unfortunately, during their adventures, the Going Merry becomes damaged and the crew got a new ship to replace it, called the Thousand Sunny.

Together, the crew set sail to the New World in pursuit of their dreams.

The World of One Piece

Humans and other races populate the World of One Piece. This includes fish-men (fish/human hybrids), mermaids, mermen, dwarves, giants, minks (human-animals), and more.

The World has two oceans which are divided by the Red Line. The Grand Line is a sea that runs perpendicular to the Red Line, which divides them further into four seas. The North Blue, East Blue, West Blue, and South Blue.

Devil Fruits

Akuma no Mi or Devil Fruit, is a type of fruit that grants power to whoever or whatever eats it. A person can only eat one Devil Fruit as the eating a second one will kill them.

There are three types of Devil Fruits:

  • Paramecia, which gives the user superhuman abilities
  • Zoan, which allows the user to fully or partially transform into an animal, human, or even mythical creatures
  • Logia, which lets the user change their body structure into the “powers of nature”.

Devil Fruit users cannot swim in water. When in the sea, they lose their strength. The same thing happens to users when they come into contact with sea-prism stones.

Interestingly, when a Devil Fruit user dies, a new Devil Fruit of the same power appears.

Devil Fruit powers can also be “awakened”, increasing the power and utility of the user’s abilities.

Some popular Devil Fruits that you might know of are Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi (rubber fruit), Trafalgar Law’s Ope Ope no Mi (operation fruit), and Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi (flame-flame or flare-flare fruit).
